LAWRENCE, Kan. — Residents across Lawrence are grappling with the aftermath of a fatal shooting early Saturday morning near a well-known bar by the University of Kansas campus that killed one young man and left another fighting for his life.
Officers were dispatched to The Hawk shortly before 2 a.m. following reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, police discovered two males with gunshot injuries. Witnesses said the suspects ran from the area on foot. Officers provided emergency medical assistance, secured the scene, and gathered statements from those nearby.
Within blocks of the shooting, police located several people who matched the descriptions provided by witnesses and detained them for questioning. As the investigation progressed, authorities established probable cause for criminal charges. Two individuals were later booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility, facing multiple charges including murder and aggravated assault.
The victim who died was identified as 18-year-old Caiden Clem, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, 16-year-old Daitron Lamont Daniels, was taken to a nearby trauma center and remains in critical condition. Officials confirmed that families have been notified and said further details will be released after the mandatory 24-hour period.
